CARA will continue to support National Governing Bodies of Sport to become more inclusive by providing advice and support on their training and education when requested.
It was an early start after the Christmas break when over 40 Leinster GAA Games Development Officers gathered in the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise for a CARA Disability Inclusion Training Course.
The course was organised by Shane Flanagan (Leinster GAA) and tutored by Liam McDonough (CARA training and Education Officer) and Niamh Daffy (CARA Centre Manager) with help from Tanja Fisher (CARA Centre Intern) .The six hour course was designed specifically for the GAA using the outline of the generic Disability Inclusion Training Course. By focusing on the fundamental skills the Games Development Officers got ideas and inspiration on how to adapt their sessions to make them more inclusive for participants with a disability. The course contained both theoretical and practical elements that covered terminology, barriers to participation, legislation, guidance, an introduction to disability sports and ways of adapting activities to make them inclusive.
Through a range of interactive exercises the Development Officers were made aware of the main barriers to participation, and are provided with practical advice and guidelines to improve their ability to adapt their games and activities to include all ability groups.
On the completion of the course the participants received a certificate of attendance and a resource pack. All participants will receive continued support from CARA such as video tutorial and online newsletter bulletins.
