Following on from the recent tutor training Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership became the first partnership to run a full Disability Inclusion Training (DIT) Course with the newly trained tutors. The course was held in Castlepark School, Dalkey on Saturday 10th of March. Twenty six participants from a variety of clubs including Soccer, martial arts, community games and even chess participated in the DIT Course.

The course was tutored by Liam McDonough (CARA Training and Education Officer) with help from Phena O’Connor from DLR Sports Partnership .The six hour course was designed to give coaches/leaders of all sports the ideas and inspiration to adapt their sessions to make them more inclusive for participants with a disability. This course contained both theoretical and practical elements that covered terminology, barriers to participation, legislation, guidance, an introduction to disability sports and ways of adapting activities to make them inclusive.

This was a very interactive day with participants brainstorming what they felt were the main barriers to participation, providing each other with practical advice and ideas to improve each others ability to adapt games and activities to include all ability groups.

Phena facilitated a discussion on local provision were all participants shared information on topics such as were they sourced funding, NGB support, where are the local special schools and how they can access people with disabilities in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area

On the completion of the course participants received a certificate of attendance and a resource pack with all the games covered in the course. All participants will receive continued support from CARA such as video tutorials and online newsletter bulletins.

The last job the course tutor asked the participants to do was fill out a course evaluation form, participants feedback is an invaluable part of future course design and delivery.

Below is a selection of comments:

“Simple but effective exercises”

“Gained new skills, which I will apply to coaching sessions, would feel more confident afterwards with the knowledge gained”

“Improved my knowledge in the area of disability- Thank You!”

“Course was a perfect mix of theory & practice, a challenging experience that really made you think and fee how a player with a disability would feel”

On Monday 27th and Tuesday 28 th of February, Auberey Bingham and Elaine Reid of DSNI provided two days of tutor training at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght . Day one consisted of going through the DSNI content and getting familiar with the delivery. All tutors were assigned tasks that they would deliver on day two which was the first full Disability Inclusion Training (DIT) course run in the Republic of Ireland. This course was organised in conjunction with South Dublin County Sports Partnership (SDCSP)

A wide range of participants attended the DIT workshop, including Sports Development Officers from Leinster Cricket, Leinster Rugby, Ladies GAA, staff from Local Leisure Centres and SDCSP staff.

With the support of Irish Blind Sports, on Sunday January 29th a group of young footballers who are visually impaired travelled to London to play a challenge game against youth players from Arsenal Football Club in the community. This grade of soccer is known as B2\B3 FUTSAL. The trip was a bridge building project with ourselves and clubs from outside Ireland. There was many purposes to this trip but one important aim was to show the players we had identified and coached last summer, and reward them with something a little special. We now hope that the experience will allow a strong follow on to regional or national gatherings of groups of soccer players to perform at a decent level and in time represent their country at major tournaments. Two players who travelled with the team, were identified directly from CampAbilities Ireland, and the remainder was identified through Local Sports Partnerships and NCBI communication.
There is training sessions planned for February, March, and April, across the provinces with the idea of offering opportunities to every young soccer player interested in recreational and higher level participation.
The age group we are looking for is 9\10 to 17\18 boys, however any player younger/older or females are welcome to contact me and we will endeavour to facilitate session as long as participant numbers are good.

A big thanks to Irish Blind Sports, all participants and parents who travelled.
We will always be searching for new participants.

For enquiries please call…

As part of NDA’s strategic commitment to raising awareness and promoting positive attitudes to disability, NDA commissioned a National Survey of Public Attitudes to Disability in Ireland. The survey builds on previous surveys conducted by NDA in 2001 and 2006, and covers a range of topics including knowledge of disability and attitudes to disability within the workplace, schools and in the neighbourhood. These important findings were launched by Kathleen Lynch, T.D. Minister of State with special responsibility for Disability, Older People, Equality & Mental Health on 19 January 2012.
