EIPET is a two year project supported by the Leonardo da Vinci fund through Léargas the National Agency for Ireland. The project commenced in November 2007 and will run until November 2009. The project was led by the Health and Leisure Department in the Institute of Technology Tralee, Co Kerry, Ireland. Four other European partners were actively involved in the development of the module. These are Palacky University Olomouc, Czech republic; Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management; Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education and Sports Coach UK.
The project set out to tackle difficulties that arise associated with the inclusion of people with disabilities into mainstream education; and associated current deficiencies in initial and continued physical education teacher training to deal with same.
The project developed a module and accompanying resource pack to enable PE teacher training organisations to readily incorporate Inclusive PE training into their undergraduate programmes. In addition two variations of the resource pack are envisaged one for non-specialist PE teachers i.e. those who have come through primary school teacher training, or currently engaged in primary school teacher training and one for in-service PE teacher training providers. The resource pack represents a lecture by lecture guide for third level institutions and in-service providers. The programme in the Institute of Technology Tralee is highly practical, and develops student’s confidence and competence in working with people with a broad range of disabilities through a unique hands-on approach. As part of the resource pack, video streaming is used to demonstrate the activities in practical sessions. This project is of particular interest to PE Teachers and colleges that prepare PE Teachers throughout Europe. Work to date can be viewed on the EIPET website, www.eipet.eu
